Today the European Consumer Centres Network (ECC-Net) launches its “Air Passengers Rights Report 2011 – in the aftermath of the Volcanic Ash Crisis”. The report analyses air travel related complaints submitted to the ECC-Net in 2010 and examines whether passengers’ rights are being complied with by the airlines.

Research carried out by the European Consumer Centre (ECC) in Ireland this week shows that less than 10% of people recently surveyed are fully aware of their rights if a flight is cancelled or delayed or if luggage is mislaid or delayed. This is despite the large scale volcanic ash crisis which caused severe cancellations and delays in April 2010.

According to the annual report of RAPEX, the EU rapid alert system for dangerous consumer products, which was published today, a total of 2244 notifications on dangerous products were received in 2010, a 13% increase on 2009. The number of notifications has been rising steadily each year and has increased by over 379% since the RAPEX system was introduced in 2004.

A European study published this week found that 64% of Irish consumers reported that they feel confident, protected and knowledgeable as consumers, well above the EU average of 44%. However when tested on their rights and skills, Irish consumers’ performance lagged behind that of many of their European counterparts.

As flights across the EU continue to be grounded due to the volcanic eruption in Iceland, ECC Ireland reminds consumers that even in these exceptional circumstances their air passenger rights continue to apply.

ECC Ireland welcomes the awareness created by the findings of an EU study, released today, on the safety of children’s clothing. The study, which was carried out by 11 European countries, including Ireland, focused on children’s clothes with cords and drawstrings and found that over one in ten items tested were in breach of EU safety standards and represented a serious risk to the children who wear them, sometimes with fatal results. Clothing with cords or drawstrings can become entangled in bicycles, doors, car doors or playground equipment leading to severe injury or death. The National Consumer Agency took part in this joint action, visiting shops to carry out inspections and removing non-complaint items from sale.
